W-2 versus 1099 and self-employment tax

A 1099 payment is not a W-2 salary with one extra tax rate. Classification, expenses, benefits, payroll, deductions, and payment timing all change the comparison.

Classification comes before calculation

W-2 employees and independent contractors follow different federal tax and labor frameworks. A contract label does not override the actual behavioral, financial, and relationship facts.

Misclassification can affect withholding, payroll taxes, benefits, unemployment coverage, workers compensation, and legal rights.

How self-employment tax differs

Employees generally see their Social Security and Medicare share withheld while the employer pays a separate share. Self-employed people generally calculate self-employment tax on net earnings using Schedule SE.

The calculation includes an adjustment reflecting the employer-equivalent portion and interacts with the annual Social Security wage base, wages from other jobs, and Additional Medicare Tax.

Start with net business profit, not 1099 receipts

Ordinary and necessary business expenses can reduce Schedule C profit. Health insurance, retirement contributions, home office, vehicles, equipment, and entity choices have separate rules.

The Section 199A qualified business income deduction can also matter, especially near income thresholds and for specified service businesses.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose whether I am W-2 or 1099?

Classification depends on the facts and applicable law. The parties cannot make an incorrect classification valid only by agreeing to it.

Is self-employment tax simply 15.3% of every dollar?

No. Net earnings adjustments, the Social Security wage base, wages from other jobs, and Additional Medicare rules affect the result.
