Quick answer
Use the federal income tax calculator when you want one annual estimate that combines ordinary income tax, preferential tax on qualified dividends and long-term gains, employee Social Security and Medicare, supported deductions, and dependent credits. It answers a broader question than a bracket or paycheck tool: what federal burden follows from the facts entered for this return? The estimate is not a filed Form 1040. State and local tax, a complete Alternative Minimum Tax calculation, refundable credits outside the model, and many special return items remain separate.
How the calculation works
From gross income to taxable income
Wages, joint spouse wages, other ordinary income, qualified dividends, and long-term capital gains first form total income. Supported adjustments reduce adjusted gross income. The calculator then uses the standard deduction or the entered itemized deduction. For 2025 a single filer receives a $15,750 standard deduction; the 2026 planning amount is $16,100. Ordinary taxable income moves through progressive 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37% layers. Preferential income is stacked after ordinary taxable income instead of being forced through those ordinary layers.
Credits, payroll tax, and return taxes
After regular income tax is calculated, supported dependent credits can reduce tax within their modeled nonrefundable limit. Employee Social Security uses 6.2% covered wages up to the annual wage base, while regular Medicare uses 1.45% without that wage-base cap. Additional Medicare Tax can apply at 0.9% above the filing-status threshold, including $200,000 for single filers and $250,000 for joint filers. Net Investment Income Tax is tested separately when investment income and modified adjusted gross income cross its statutory threshold.
What a high-income result still leaves open
A large ordinary-income, capital-gain, deduction, or credit result can interact with AMT. This page does not complete Form 6251, so it never labels the regular-tax estimate as a final AMT answer. It also omits state and local liability rather than applying a state top rate. A high earner should review Additional Medicare Tax, NIIT, itemized-deduction treatment, and AMT with the cited forms. Withholding is not entered as tax liability here; use the refund calculator to reconcile payments after liability is estimated.
2025 and 2026 values
Tax year 2025
2025 final values
Final 2025 single-filer values include a $15,750 standard deduction and ordinary bracket ceilings of $11,925 at 10%, $48,475 at 12%, and $103,350 at 22%. Employee payroll rates are 6.2% Social Security and 1.45% Medicare.
Tax year 2026
2026 planning values
The 2026 planning comparison uses a $16,100 single standard deduction and single ordinary bracket ceilings of $12,400, $50,400, and $105,700 for the first three layers. Later filing instructions can still affect return details.

Worked example
Single filer with $210,000 of wages
A single filer selects 2025, enters $210,000 of W-2 wages, no other income, no dependents, and the standard deduction.
- Ordinary taxable income = $210,000 − $15,750 standard deduction = $194,250.
- The progressive ordinary-tax calculation produces $39,467 of federal income tax for the supported 2025 method.
- Employee payroll tax = $176,100 × 6.2% Social Security + $210,000 × 1.45% Medicare = $10,918.20 + $3,045 = $13,963.20.
- Additional Medicare Tax = ($210,000 − $200,000 single threshold) × 0.9% = $90, bringing employee payroll tax to $14,053.20.
Result
The estimate shows $39,467 federal income tax and $14,053.20 employee payroll tax. It does not add Texas liability merely because Texas was selected; the state profile is informational.

Common mistakes
Entering net pay as wages
Wages should be the annual W-2 amount before federal withholding and employee payroll deductions. Net pay understates income and causes every later layer to be wrong.
Reading the marginal rate as an average
The highest occupied bracket applies only to the dollars in that layer. It is not multiplied by all income, and it should not be substituted for the displayed effective burden.
Assuming the estimate clears AMT
Regular income tax can differ from tentative minimum tax. Large deductions, incentive stock options, and other preference items require a separate Form 6251 review.
Threshold screen only
Alternative Minimum Tax boundary
This calculator does not complete Form 6251. Large deductions, incentive stock options, and other preference items can make a regular federal estimate differ from AMT. Use the high earner guide and the cited IRS instructions before treating a result as complete.
